Scam checklist
"AI trading" scams have multiplied. If you see any one of these ten signs, stop.
Ten signs
- Guaranteed returns. "Can't lose", "3% a day", "double your money". Real trading guarantees nothing.
- They want an API key that can trade or withdraw. With that key, someone else trades your money.
- They want your money: sent to them to "manage", or deposited on a platform or app they choose.
- You must pay to withdraw. A "verification fee", "deposit", "unlock fee" or "tax". Paying doesn't get your money out.
- A "support agent", "mentor" or "assistant" messages you first. Real projects don't.
- "AI picks" groups, paid signals, trade calls, copy trading. Your money follows someone else's hand.
- Only screenshots of profits. No full record you can check trade by trade.
- Fake apps and fake sites. A domain one or two letters off the real one; an app you're asked to install from a chat link.
- Pressure to decide now. "Last 3 spots", "closes tonight".
- Celebrity endorsements and fake news screenshots. The celebrity never said it.
Cases that happened
- Mainland China: "Baiyu Quant" in Wuhan promised 3–5% a day, blocked withdrawals in December 2025 citing a "risk review", then disappeared. (Tencent News, Sina Finance) Since July 2026, nearly ten brokers, including Galaxy, Guosheng and Zhongtai, have warned about scams dressed up as AI stock tips and quant trading. (Shanghai Securities News)
- Hong Kong: in May 2026 police warned about fake "AI crypto investment apps" after more than 70 cases and over HK$50 million in losses in one week. (The Standard)
- Taiwan: in 2024 a 73-year-old man in Kaohsiung put NT$820,000 of retirement savings into an "AI auto-trading" app. It showed NT$22.45 million; he was told to pay a 2% "verification fee" (about NT$450,000) before he could withdraw. (Liberty Times)
- United States: in May 2026 the SEC charged a Texas man over a $12.3 million scheme sold as an AI trading bot. (Bloomberg Law)
- United Kingdom: in April 2026 the FCA led 17 regulators in action against illegal finfluencers. Promoting financial products on social media without authorisation is illegal in the UK: one guilty plea so far, two more facing criminal proceedings. (FCA)
- Exchanges: in October 2025 Binance banned more than 600 accounts for "unauthorized third-party tools", mostly on Binance Alpha. Under Binance's rules, that covers unapproved trading bots, API abuse and shared accounts. (The Block)
